Honda NX500 Owner’s Manual Summary (Engine Oil & Maintenance)

1. Engine Oil Specifications

  • Recommended Oil Type: Pro Honda GN4 4-stroke oil (or equivalent motorcycle engine oil)
  • API Classification: SJ or higher (Note: Exclude oils labeled as “Energy Conserving” on the circular API label, as they can cause clutch slippage)
  • JASO Standard: JASO T 903 standard MA
  • Viscosity Grade: SAE 10W-30 (Standard factory recommendation)

2. Engine Oil Capacities & Hardware Codes (Honda NX500 / CB500XA)

  • Oil Change Only (without filter replacement): * 2.4 Liters
  • Oil and Filter Change (with filter replacement): * 2.6 Liters
  • Total Disassembly Capacity: * 3.1 Liters
  • Oil Filter Part Code: 15410-MFJ-D02 (or equivalent aftermarket such as Putoline HF204)
  • Oil Drain Plug Bolt 12X15 Part Code: 90131-883-000

3. Maintenance Intervals

  • Initial Oil & Filter Change: At 1,000 km or 1 month (whichever comes first).
  • Regular Maintenance Schedule: * Engine Oil Replacement: Every 12,000 km or 1 year.
    • Oil Filter Replacement: Every 24,000 km or 2 years (Note: Many service providers choose to replace the filter at every oil change as best practice).
    • Drive Chain Check & Lubrication: Every 1,000 km.

4. Proper Oil Level Check Procedure

  1. Start the engine and let it idle for 3 to 5 minutes.
  2. Stop the engine and wait 2 to 3 minutes for the oil to settle.
  3. Hold the motorcycle upright on level ground.
  4. Check the oil level through the crankcase inspection window:
    • The oil level should sit comfortably between the upper and lower level marks.
    • If it is low, remove the oil filler cap and top up using the recommended oil up to the upper mark. Do not overfill.

5. Drive Chain Slack

  • Target Chain Slack: 30 – 40 mm
  • Measurement Method: Measured vertically at the lower run midway between the sprockets, with the motorcycle on its side stand, transmission in neutral, and no weight on it.
