Maintenance is the part of “the grind” that every rider must embrace. If you want your bike to last, the most important thing you can do is give it high-quality blood. For my Honda CB500X, I’ve settled on Castrol Power1 Ultimate 10W-40.

After a few thousand miles, here is my honest take on why this is my go-to lubricant.

Why Castrol Power1 Ultimate?

This isn’t just standard mineral oil. The “Ultimate” range is a full synthetic 5-in-1 formula. Castrol claims it helps with five key areas:

  1. Acceleration: Faster throttle response.
  2. Protection: 50% better wear protection than industry standards.
  3. Smooth Riding: Noticeably smoother clutch engagement.
  4. Cooling: Keeps the engine cool even on long-distance tours.
  5. Enduring Performance: Maintains its viscosity for longer.

My Experience on the CB500X

If you’re riding a 471cc Honda twin like mine, you know it’s a bulletproof engine, but it deserves the best. For a standard oil and filter change, the CB500X needs 3 bottles of 1 liter. You won’t use every last drop of the third bottle (it usually takes around 2.7L), but having that 3rd bottle is essential. I always keep the leftover bit in my pannier for top-ups on long trips. Since switching, I’ve noticed the gear shifts are much “snappier” and the engine sound is more refined at high RPMs.

⚠️ Warning: Beware of Fake & Recycled Oil

This is the most important part of this post. Because Castrol is a popular brand, the market is flooded with fake or recycled oil. Unscrupulous sellers take old, used oil, filter it chemically to make it look clear again, and put it in fake bottles. Using this “zombie oil” will destroy your engine from the inside out, leading to sludge buildup and even total engine seizure.

How to stay safe:

  • Buy from the Official Shop: Never buy from a random, “too good to be true” cheap seller.
  • Check the Seal: Ensure the cap and the foil seal are intact.
  • Check for SIRIM Label: If you are in Malaysia, check that it has SIRIM label or sticker. alt text
  • Scan the QR/Hologram: Most modern Castrol bottles have a security code you can verify.

I always buy my oil from the Official Castrol Store online to ensure I’m getting the real deal. It’s worth the extra couple of dollars to protect a multi-thousand dollar machine.
